RUC MON CAVE EXPEDITION

This two day - one night tour is perfectly designed for those thrill seekers who want to explore caves in the towering karst mountains, hike through the lush wilderness, diner at home of local people, and see how the local Chut people live. You’ll get wet, you’ll get dirty, and you’ll make the memories of a lifetime!

Explore the customs of the Chut minority and both entrances of the of the Ruc Mon Cave

On the first day of this tour your adventure begins at the front entrance of Ruc Mon where the river cuts its way deep into this karst mountain cave, located near to the Laotian border (so be sure to bring your passport). Getting there will take some unique, and provided, travel arrangements. The journey includes a brief stop for a photo opportunity at the Da Deo Mountain Pass, and a hike through corn, peanut, and tea plantations where you will meet the people of the Chut ethnic minority for a one of a kind cultural experience. Here, at the mouth of the cave, we will share a locally made lunch prepared by our hosts, The Chut. After the exchange we will continue our journey!

Be prepared for the time of your life as you submerge yourself in a subterranean river and through pools of soothing thermal water! This cave is equipped with four unique and naturally formed floors, each roughly 40m long. The first floor is wet with breathtaking and massive cave formations and you will either wade or swim into the cave. The second floor will be dry or wet, depending on the season, and by using a rope you’ll easily ascend the gentle slope between the floors. The third floor, which you’ll get to with the aid of a rope ladder, alternates between dry and muddy (there’s nothing quite like cave mud). In the fourth floor you’ll find a dreamlike state of fog and the only way to achieve this floor is by climbing to it, this is the floor reserved for the greatest of adventurers!

After spending one night in Chut Village, your second day will start with breakfast with locals before making your way back entrance of Hang Ruc Mon (same entrance as the Adventure Tour). You will have the chance to swim, climb, and boulder through the full length of this massive cave. Once exiting the cave through the second entrance you will be greeted with hot coffee/tea and a BBQ lunch cooked by locals. After lunch you will make your way to Yen Phu Lake that is full of cows, water buffalo, and many other walks of life.

This cave was only recently discovered and accessible for tourists, so you can lead the way and be one of the pioneering adventurers here! Hang Ruc Mon is 14 km long, up to 32m high and 13m wide, estimated to be the second largest caves in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park area. By joining Green Land Tours on this expedition you can experience the incredible world beneath the earth’s surface; featuring the beautifully sparkling rock, towering stalagmites and stalactites dripping down to form over hundreds of millions of years. The stone formations in this cave include; flow stone, drapery and cave pearls, making this exploration incredibly exciting and unique. You will swim in the crystal clear water running through an ancient river that forged a path as it pushed through minuscule cracks in the limestone. En route you will get to visit local villages, Yen Phu Lake as well as one of the dramatic filming locations of the latest King Kong movie! There are no other companies going to Hang Ruc Mon, so if you want to get off the beaten track and discover true peacefulness in the Vietnamese countryside, this is the tour for you. Our friendly guides will help you along the way, leaving you feeling comfortable and safe throughout and the stunning scenery will help you to relax and rejuvenate you.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

8:00 ~ 8:45 AM: Once everyone has been picked up you’ll be driven 30km over the historic Da Deo Mountain Pass. Here you’ll enjoy some breathtaking views looking down into the jungle and get some insight into the history of the area and the mountain range through which you’ll be exploring. During the two hour drive your guides will tell you all about the spectacular history of the area and prepare you for the adventures that await you?

11:00 AM: When you arrive and park, you will embark on a thirty minute walk to the Chut village where you can spend some time to get acquainted there. You can leave your excess luggage and just take your tour necessities. Then you’ll hit the jungle trail! It is a 2km trek past peanut plantations and many water buffalo, and into the jungle. After wading across the river you’ll reach the ginormous entrance of Hang Ruc Mon. When you reach the entrance of the cave you will have some time to relax and rest your legs while a delicious BBQ meal is prepared for you. A vegetarian option is always available. You will feast local style where all the food is spread out onto banana leaves, you can pick and choose what you want and wrap it up in spring roll rice paper.

12:30 PM: Re-energised for the next part of the tour, you enter the cave by leaping into the crystal clear water, sure to wake you up after lunch and prepare you for the adventure! It is a leisurely swim, approximately 1.5km to the dry path. From here you will explore the many huge chambers from this entrance of the cave. Pause to respect millennia of history that it took to form the incredible stalagmites and stalactites, rare stone formations exclusive of other caves you might see in the Phong Nha area. You can find fossils, see cave pearls and lose yourself happily in this cave. Touch the stone where the water has shaped its path, dip your hand into the deep dimples that have eroded away over time. You can spend about three hours in here, pausing for breaks if you feel tired, or going deeper into the abyss if you dare! Once back at the cave entrance, you’ll have a chance to dry off and after a half an hour trek you will arrive back at the village.

5:00 PM: Once back among the Chut people you will enjoy their warm hospitality and a hot or cold drink. Vietnam is home to 54 unique minorities, each with their own language, culture and customs. You’ll find yourself helpless to the charms of the Chut people of Tang Hoa. You will have dinner with your village hosts and enjoy an overnight stay in a traditional stilt house. You have the whole evening to absorb the feel of the village and relax.

Day 2

8:00 AM: Wake up for a breakfast with eggs and your choice of bread or noodles.

9:00 AM: We’ll start the day off right by traversing through the beautiful and biodiverse Ke Bang National Park. Upon reaching Yen Phu village you will set off towards Yen Phu Lake, the residence of the famous giant King Kong. Here we will walk for 6-7kms (roughly 4 miles) crossing several rivers through the picturesque mountains.

12:00 PM: Finally, we’ll arrive in Hang Ruc Mon 2, this is the back entrance of the Hang Ruc Mon 1 cave. Here we will cool off in the mineral rich waters at the cave entrance while our picnic lunch is prepared. Once reinvigorated by lunch, we will swim about 800m into the cave. After exploring the cave for a bit we’ll swim back to the entrance before quickly looking into another dry cave passage. All together we’ll spend about an hour and a half inside the cave.

3:00 PM: Once we’re done exploring the cave system we will trek through the vast peanut plantations on our way to the remote Yen Phu lake. Here we’ll enjoy a well-deserved cold and refreshing drink while basking in the fairytale landscape of the emerald waters and mountainous backdrop.

4:00 PM: Say goodbye to the lovely village and return to Phong Nha. With your adventure tour nearly complete, the last leg of the tour is a 70km car ride back to town through the historic Da Deo Mountain Pass. Here you’ll have time to reflect on the sights and experiences of the past two days.
